Best location in The Gambia for owls!

Verreaux's Eagle Owl
Copyright: eanaylor.jadan@pop3.hiway.co.ukBirdwatchers and other nature lovers have been delighted to discover these beautiful birds within the Bird Safari Camp grounds. Verreaux's Eagle owls (pictured here) weigh over 2kg and have wings about half a metre long!

The following is an email we received from Dr. Heimo Mikkola, an international Owl Expert, who has recently been to the camp...

Dear Bird Safari Camp,

It was a great pleasure to me (and later to my wife, Anita, as well) to visit your exciting camp.

Nowhere in the world, except in our own garden in Malawi, we have seen or heard five owls in one place. You have such a place!

It was unfortunate that some of my partners don't know OWLS as well as I do, so they started to feel that they must be frogs or whatever else. However, it is now well established by me and MORE IMPORTANTLY by my much more scientific and critical wife, that you have at least five different owl species in and around your camp.

I don't mind if you state in your Web- page that Dr Heimo Mikkola and his wife Anita (also a Biologist at Master of Science-level) have heard at least the following owls from your premises:
  • Senegalese Scops Owl
  • European Scops Owl
  • Northern White-faced Owl
  • Milky Eagle Owl
  • and (possibly) African Wood Owl!
By comparison I want to repeat what Dr Jeff Marks asked me to tell you:
Many African Scops-Owls and a few Northern White-faced Owls can be heard at Bird Safari Camp on a regular basis, and with a bit of luck, the scops-owls can be tracked down and viewed at night. Bird Safari Camp is perhaps one of the best locations in The Gambia to hear large number of African Scops Owls".
Stephen, Anita and I will come back to Bird Safari Camp together, and we will show you some of your treasures.

Best regards,

Heimo
