Monitor lizards make BSC their home

Don't be alarmed if you think you see a crocodile at Bird Safari Camp! Crocodiles are very rarely sighted in The Gambia and they tend to avoid human activity - the nearest one was in fact spotted a safe distance away on the south bank of the island. Stories of men being swallowed alive by the awesome creatures fortunately do not fill the local press!

What you are more likely to have seen is a harmless, though equally impressive, monitor lizard. We currently have five of them living near the camp and some are as much as one and a half metres long. They are most often sighted scavenging for food near our compost heap at the back of the camp. Approach quietly as they are very shy!
